One of the excitements connected with these trips was the mystery it involved.  It is hard to realize here that it is of any possible importance, but it was brought home to me that it was.  For instance when Dr Derby went north & came back mentioning a few things he had seen on the road there was a great excitement.  The story got exaggerated went all over the hospital and finally got back to French people high up in the government who became angry and thought it better for Americans
