I felt as if I were looking at post carts much more than as if I were looking at the real thing and I wanted to pinch myself to feel it was real.  Just outside of Creil we passed a long convoy of Paris busses - The actual signs were no longer on them, the advertisements and destinations all carefully painted away with gray paint, but we could almost still imagine them lumbering down the Champs Elysées.  Somehow one saw in the eyes of the peasants the memory still of the Uhlans who had invaded their land not so long ago.

Frequently a Red Cross car passed us on the road, motors with officers, postal cars looking [[strikethrough]] lit [[/strikethrough]] very businesslike, low and small & always grey.  They go out very close to the front with their messages of cheer.  Armored motor cars equipped with machine guns
