Had I been scared at the firing, no I thought it was a sunset gun!  They did laugh.

I had hoped an aeroplane raid was going to be made - no such luck.

X On reaching Amiens we did not find Moulin and the Renault with whom we had had a rendezvous. ^[[x]]  These northern towns are very spooky at night - scarcely a light in the streets, and after seven very few people about, but as the days are very short after 4.30 or 5 is a long interval when the people still move about ambulances dash by motors toot their shrill horns, soldiers, officers and a few civilians walk the streets intent on some mission or gazing at the passersby, quiet, serious people all, unlike the Frenchmen of long ago. Women in black whom one feels have come in search of a dead son or husband haunt you with their tragic faces.  I made them all walk to the cathedral with me - for we might never see it again - All one could see was its marvelous outline and they laughed at me for having a thrill over it.  I told them they were dried up old fogies and that nothing but an ambulance or a mitrailleuse ^[[X]]
