Next morning Major Evans and Captain Reilly came for us to go to Merville. We had a very early start being called at six. The light, which just began to come in over the roofs as I finished dressing, [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] ^[[lit up]] a strange scene. My room was tiny and gave out on the smallest street I have ever seen out^[[side]] of Italy. Dinner the night before was a strange experience. The three disapproving women & myself being the only women. At least 50 officers. I wanted to cry when I looked at them. Bob was awfully nice that evening - all the men seemed to want to make ^[[themselves agreable]] to me - it was a strange feeling of unreality I had all the evening and I felt very excited.
