Statement of J. Benbow

Mr S. B. Glen told me that he said to Davis in the presence of (Reese) that he had whipped the boy Davis once for stealing and that unless he told the whole truth about the matter or the whole story he would whip him again - that Davis then confessed to Mrs Murrow in the presence of he Glenn and Reese the jailor, to the commission of the crime as charged and other similar crimes.

James Davis is a man of property a Union man and a man of [[underlined]] truth [[/underlined]] - but a man of immoral character - is very much noted for his immorality - the boy Davis bore a [[underlined]] good [[/underlined]] character until since the war, since which time he has associated with lewd white women, and it is believed that they induced him to steal to supply them with money. It is well understood the boy Robert Davis was induced to confess by the statements of Reese, - and with the impression that the punishment for the crime he had committed, was much less than it is. Before the war the courts would not have convicted him of burglary.
