Dear Sir,

I deem it a duty I owe to the cause of justice and right, as well as to the deserving and industrious portion of the colored people in and about Raleigh - to give to you, the following piece of information.

When it was understood I was about leaving Raleigh, to come West, there were divers applications made to me, and to Lewis Manly (colored) - my agent, to come out with me, by certain freedmen in Raleigh.  Decided and conclusive bargains were made with seven men.  Five of them bargained and agreed with me in person, and two with Lewis Manly.  They were informed, that there must be no deception or backing out - as I should make an effort to get transportation for them, from the Freedmen's Bureau;  and that they must do
