He reshaped the A9 trajectory, but that was in '44, probably after we went back to A9. The original A9 trajectory was like the V2 trajectory falling back into the atmosphere and then --
[00:40:27]

{SPEAKER name="MICHAEL NEUFELD"}
And then it had to kind of skip.
[00:40:29]

{SPEAKER name="WERNER KARL DAHM"}
Yeah, skip.
[00:40:30]

And this man calculated back from the impact point, at optimum glide angle, and fared this into a launch trajectory. A really nifty idea, much better, load-wise. Performance-wise it was about the same, the range was about the same, but the loads were much lower. The heating would have been much lower. Aerodynamic heating, that is.
[00:40:58]

{SPEAKER name="MICHAEL NEUFELD"}
But, uh, still, the A9 was or A4B was not going to be able to uh --

{SPEAKER name="WERNER KARL DAHM"}
No --

{SPEAKER name="MICHAEL NEUFELD"}
-- to uh --

{SPEAKER name="WERNER KARL DAHM"}
-- to fly -- to be controlled. Yes. Yes.

{SPEAKER name="MICHAEL NEUFELD"}
-- to fly that trajectory, is still, still impossible.
[00:41:11]

{SPEAKER name="MICHAEL NEUFELD"}
But, uh, so, but uh, by and large the Project Office was fully occupied with trying to design Wasserfall.

{SPEAKER name="WERNER KARL DAHM"}
Yes.
[00:41:18]

{SPEAKER name="MICHAEL NEUFELD"}
And, uh, how long did it take you to sort of define the basic configuration of Wasserfall? Do you have a pretty good idea of what you wanted to do in the beginning and by the - [[crosstalk]]
[00:41:31]

{SPEAKER name="WERNER KARL DAHM"}
Well, we, we knew from the start, we heard about the tanks, the engine. We knew about the shape of the fuselage, the size. The diameter was different, from the engine side. And we knew we needed a crosswind, in order not to have to roll, for quicker response. So it did not take very long to define, my, the initial design. The final design had the same fuselage, but, uh, different wings.
