Thursday [December 1947] Dear Esther I returned André Gide today, regretfully, have only glanced at it a bit, but I found no one has asked for it & so tomorrow I may get it back again! Excellent! It is very stimulating, like vitamins! And yes what a literary registry of names - I caught this - of Oscar Wilde. After Gide's criticism of his plays - "Oh I am a genius only in my life, talent in my plays -" That's not a correct quote - But the one I enclose is fine, don't you think? His recipe for acquiring
