SOCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT, 1957 - 1958

The following is a resumé of the social services activities of the Taipei International Women's Club for the 1957-1958 Club year. Matters pending as of June 11, 1958, the date of compilation, are so listed.

The Social Services Committee acknowledges the assistance of the membership of the TIWC, the several United States and Chinese Government agencies that have contributed so generously to our program, the Rotary Club, the Coordinating Council of Voluntary Agencies - of which TIWC is a regular members, the Church World Service, National Catholic Welfare Organization, ICA Welfare Group, MAAG Women's Club, Signal Corps Wives' Club, YWCA, Club 63, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other similar voluntary organizations.

[[underlined]] Aid to Families Sub-Committee:[/underlined]]

1. Distributed clothing to Yangmingshan Family Center, Mutual Help Center, Chinese-Vietnamese refugee group, Air Force dependents' housing area near Taipei Golf Course, Hsin Yi Lu street sweepers and to blind persons in Taipei (through the Association for the Promotion of the Welfare of the Blind).

2. Distributed food at Yangmingshan Family Center, Mutual Help Center and Pa Tu military dependents area.

3. Brought 72 children from Yangmingshan Family Center and 34 from Mutual Help Center to see ballet, "Hansel and Gretel", December 8, 1957, at International House.

4. At Mutual Help Center, repaired sewing machines (NT$400); installed small play equipment, including 2 schoolroom tables, 6 tricycles, 3 rocking horses, and misc. crayons, scissors, etc. (NT$2420); made Christmas visit and distributed gifts.

5. NT$10,000 allocated for purchase of housing unit in Madame Chiang Kai-shek's military dependents housing project.

6. Established PX contact for MND Dependents Handicraft Factory.

7. NT$1000 allocated for medicines for Mrs. Francisca Chen, German-Chinese refugee, suffering from cancer.

8. Christmas program given at Pa Tu military dependents area by Taipei-American School - coordinated through TIWC.

[[underlined]] Children's Institutions Sub-Committee: [/underlined]]

1. Visits made and clothing and food distributed at Jen Ai Children's Home, Provincial Taipei Children's Home, Hsin Ai Nursery, Teachers' Children of First Girls' Middle School Nursery and Ta-Tung Children's Home. Clothing distributed at Ming Teh Nursery; good delivered at Door of Hope, Po Ai Nursery, Wego Orphanage; visits made to Yu Hong Kindergarten and Hua Shing Children's Home.

2. Christmas visits made and gifts distributed at Jen Ai Children's Home, Provincial Taipei Children's Home, Wego Orphanage, Po Ai Nursery, Teachers' Children of First Girls' (Middle School Nursery, Ming Teh Nursery, and Ta-Tung Children's Home. Club 63 gave Christmas party and gifts at Door of Hope; MAAG Women's Club gave Christmas party and gifts at Hsin Ai Nursery - coordinated through TIWC.

3. Entertained children from Ta-Tung Children's Home, Jen Ai Children's Home, Provincial Taipei Children's Home, Wego Orphanage and Hua Shing Children's Home at ballet, "Hansel and Gretel", on December 8, 1957, at International House.

4. At Jen Ai Children's Home, NT$4,235 allocated for tables and benches; interest on Admiral Cooke fund delivered each month; radio (privately donated) delivered, investigation begun on project to use principal of Admiral Cooke fund.
