[[underlined]] 59 [[/underlined]]. The garden is said to have been laid out in 1740, and through the years the original form has been preserved. The box adds much to its beauty and there are many great old trees. The garden is terminated by a twenty foot hedge of hemlock. The estate is now owned by Mrs. William West Frazier who has used skill and discrimination in her replanting and care of the older features.

[[underlined]] Economy, near Pittsburgh [[/underlined]]. (1750)

The Harmony Society was founded in the early years of the 18th century by George Rapp or "Father" Rapp, as his followers from Germany called him. About eighteen miles from Pittsburgh, the Society founded a unique community called "Economy".

[[underlined]] 60 [[/underlined]]. Here they built a model town with wide streets and frame and brick dwellings. Behind the house of the leader was laid out an ample garden, still in existence. This garden seems a bit of the old world; the geometric forms of the old house are carried out in the stiff little beds filled with brilliant flowers and edged with heavy cut stone.

[[underlined]] 61 [[/underlined]]. There was a fish-pond and in the center a summer house on the roof of which a band played on gala occasions. This garden house is a fine architectural example of the Palladian classic.

The Society died out, and the custody of the property is now in the hands of the Harmony Society Historical Association. The Garden Club of Allegheny County has charge of the Garden and has preserved as much ^[[as]] possible all the quaint old world charm.
