Mrs. Gray is a member of the Renaissance Society of America. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Education. She holds honorary degrees from a number of colleges and universities, including Oxford, Yale, Brown, Columbia, Princeton, and the University of Michigan.

She is a trustee of the University of Chicago, Bryn Mawr College, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, the Field Foundation of Illinois, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the Board of Overseers, Harvard University.

She also is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations of New York.

In addition, Mrs. Gray is a member of the boards of directors of J.P. Morgan & Company/Morgan Guaranty, the Cummins Engine Company, Atlantic Richfield Company, and Ameritech.

In 1986, Mrs. Gray was one of twelve distinguished foreign-born Americans to receive a Medal of Liberty award from President Reagan at ceremonies marking the rekindling of the Statue of Liberty's lamp.

Her husband, Charles M. Gray, is Professor in the Department of History at the University of Chicago. He was a member of the Chicago faculty from 1960 to 1974, and he returned in 1978.
