campaign to raise funds for the partially trust funded construction of the Mall facility for the National Museum of the American Indian.

Grant and contract activity is difficult to project because of the uncertainty surrounding Federal funding for source agencies in future years. The Institution's objectives are to maintain at least a relatively stable level of funding and to approach actively various agencies with proposals for research support in areas related to the Smithsonian's unique research strengths and interests. The Institution projects levels of approximately $38 million in fiscal year 1997.

The following motion was approved:

VOTED that the Board of Regents approves proceeding with distribution of the Five-Year Prospectus, Fiscal Years 1993-1997 anticipating that annual revisions will be presented for its approval.

STATUS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN

A status report informed the Regents on legal proceedings of the Huntington Free Library, the transfer of money from New York City and State for Custom House renovations, lease negotiations with GSA for use of the Custom House, and the Campaign for the National Museum (an overview of fiscal years 1989-92).

ESTABLISHING A FIELD STATION AT BOCAS DEL TORO, PANAMA

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) is interested in augmenting its present research interests by establishing a small field station on Colon Island in the town of Bocas del Toro, which is along the Atlantic Coast of Panama approximately halfway between the extensive coral reefs of Bocas del Draga at the northwestern end of the island and Bastimentos National Park with extensive mangrove islands and sea turtle nesting beaches.
