celebrating the 25th anniversary of its establishment, and concluded its discussions in a three hour meeting at the Castle on Sunday morning.

At that meeting, besides discussing the contents of this letter, the Council went over possible changes in its own procedures, and responded to the agenda proposed by the Secretary for next year's meeting. A consensual view emerged that a Front Royal visit, discussions of collaborative conservation undertakings, a visit to the National Zoo, discussion of the future of zoos and of conservation of endangered animal species, and a visit to newly reopened Freer, constituted too crowded and top-heavy a program. Council members spoke of the desirability of balancing the agenda between discussion sessions and visits to exhibitions and facilities. Various compromises were described including a discussion in Washington, of issues that might have been the focus of a Front Royal visit; an all day meeting at the zoo; and an afternoon at Freer. These details can be worked out in the near future, with the participation of the new Chair.

It remains, this time with even more feeling than usual, to represent the Council's appreciation and my own gratitude for the thoughtful and extended hospitality we received. The Saturday night dinner was a memorable occasion, giving special meaning to a word we had been using much over the two previous days--celebration. Mike Young's retirement from Council matters is a matter of keen regret, since we have been so long indebted to his careful and thoughtful management of so many detailed arrangements. His own statement at the dinner was much valued and appreciated. The Council looks forward to working closely with Marc Pachter and Neil Kotler. And finally, speaking for myself as the retiring Chair, I am grateful to you and the Regents for their support and the great honor to the Joseph Henry Medal. I anticipate much from the new leadership Maxine Singer will bring to the post of Chair. And we all wish you and the Smithsonian as a whole a productive and satisfying year ahead, and await with eagerness your reply.

Sincerely,
Neil
