This discussion led to Professor Heyman's presentation of the Nominating Committee's second recommendation, the nomination of Barber B. Conable, Jr., of New York. He noted that Mr. Conable recently retired as President of the World Bank, had spent twenty years in Congress, and has served on the boards of several multi-national corporations as well as the New York Stock Exchange. He has been active also in a number of museums, foundations, and other not-for-profit organizations, was a professor at the University of Rochester, and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation. In short, the Committee recommended Mr. Conable because of his breadth of experience in public and financial institutions, his credibility both in New York and Washington, and his association through the years with the Museum of the American Indian, both at the Heye Foundation and, currently, on the Board of Trustees of the National Museum. At Professor Heyman's suggestion, Mr. Adams elaborated on the reinforcement Mr. Conable would bring to the National Museum of the American Indian from his membership on the Board of Regents.

The following motion was approved by a majority of the Regents:

VOTED that the Board of Regents nominates Barber B. Conable, Jr., for a statutory term as a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution effective as soon as practicable (there being a current vacancy owing to the recent expiration of Mr. McHenry's term). The Board asks its Congressional members to introduce and support legislation to that effect.
