PORT OF OAKLAND
J. Walter Frates
Grove Street Pier
Oakland 7, California

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 13, 1952

Oakland Municipal Airport will receive the Harris-Franklin Trophy for outstanding observance of aviation safety and operation during the past year from the San Francisco Sheriff's Air Squadron at a luncheon Saturday, February 16, at 1:30 p.m. at the Oakland Airport Restaurant, it was announced today.

Dudley W. Frost, president of the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners, which administers the airport, will accept the award on behalf of the Board and the airport personnel from A. E. Lattimore, commander of the sheriff's squadron.

Oakland Airport won the award not only for its outstanding record in the safety field, but also for its efficient and considerate treatment of the private plane pilots, officers of the squadron said. Despite the heavy load of commercial and military traffic using the airport, the high standards and concern for the small plane operators has been maintained.

The trophy is in memorium of Tex Harris and Marvin Franklin, former members of the sheriff's squadron, who died in 1949. Both were active in the advancement of safety in aviation.

Standard Oil Company of California is the previous winner of the trophy. Standard received the award for providing air markers, such as those on roof tops, to help small plane pilots in navigation. Unlike most awards, the Harris-Franklin trophy is only given for outstanding achievement in aviation safety when it is deemed that there is a deserving winner.

The San Francisco Sheriff's squadron is composed of thirty-five members, each of whom has his own plane. The squadron is active in emergency rescue work, civilian defense, safety inspection, traffic problems, and the air marking of buildings.
