Everybody joined in, and at the expense of bruised fingers and clothing ruined by grease, we attained a speed that would have been outstanding at a Volunteer Fireman Tournament.

A heavy fog delayed our departure from Elmira until two pm September twenty third. Only a few miles were made that afternoon. Cal had landed at Canestro when we reached there, so we picked him up and went on in to Hornell for the night.

On Sunday the twenty sixth we made an early start. Cal had the advantage again of a tail wind and was ahead of us all day. One of the few Indian Reservations in the East is located along either side of the Erie right of way, west of Salamanca N.Y. When we reached the little settlement of Red House on this reservation, we found Cal had been forced down by magnet trouble. He had landed in a field just north of the Erie tracks. It was late afternoon, so the mechanicians were left with the plane and the others in the party went back to Salamanca for the night.
