In considering the appearance of planes at altitude, it is interesting to note that one hardly ever sees a plane until the motor is heard. By the use of silencer a big advantage would be gained, especially in the use of planes operating at low altitudes.
Combat aviation or the air force consists of Pursuit, Bombardment, and [[Attadir?]].
PURSUIT.
Pursuit aviation is organised normally on the basis of 25 planes per squadron, of four squadrons per group, and three groups per wing.
The principal role of pursuit is to gain and hold control of the air by seeking out and destroying the hostile airplanes wherever they may be found. Consequently it must maintain the offensive at all times. It is apparent that to accomplish this end, pursuit must be employed in large units. Its strength should not be dissipated by being broken up for use as local protection fro ground troops and observation.
Our general method of handling pursuit with an army during the ware was to employ our patrols in three pursuit barrages. The low barrage being at 1500 to 2000 feet, mainly for protection against battle planes operating against our ground troops; the medium barrage at about 9 to 10,000 feet, its principal objective being the built of the hostile pursuit; and the upper barrage at 16,000 feet. In addition, special pursuit was employed at 16 to 19,000 feet for work against high enemy reconnaissance planes. This
