in the Argonne by the Germans, in the use of battle planes against our front line troops. One or two machines only were usually employed, using missiles consisting of small bombs and hand grenades.  The result in material damage was slight but the resulting loss of morale of our troops was great, compared to the amount of actual damage inflicted.
In illustrating the general method of the employment of aviation of the army corps, army, etc., your attention is invited to the following slides:
This shows in general the employment of the aviation of an army corps; that is, the Air Force itself.  Here we have the corps photographic machine working at about 7500 feet; the adjustment of the 6 in. long at about 10,000 feet; the corps artillery surveillance and fugitive target plane at about 9,000 feet; the adjustment of 3 in. and 6 in. short at about 7,000 or 8,000 feet; the balloon, as you notice, operates at 3,000 to 4,000 feet, while the infantry liaison and command plane operates at about 300 feet.  You will notice that no pursuit is shown. In other words its aviation is limited to observation, or air service proper, operating directly with the ground troops; the combat aviation on which it depends for protection being directly under the command of the army.
