Army Reconnaissance and Army Artillery Squadrons for adjustment of large range artillery. You will notice that the attack and pursuit flights operate at very low altitude. The primary duty of the latter is for use against opposing attack and low pursuit planes. Incidentally, we were the first to ever use low pursuit. Its use was instituted primarily to combat the German battle plane, but it also had the effect of lowering the medium and high pursuit barrages about 5,000 feet. At the time that the use of pursuit was instituted in this manner, it was contemplated the pursuit would tend to operate at higher altitudes instead of lower, but this resulted in stabilizing the medium barrage at about 9,000 feet, with the upper barrage at 15,000 feet. The army reconnaissance, as you will notice, works at about 18,000 feet, gaining safety in altitude for its long flights into enemy territory.
In a group of armies your combat aviation would be directly under the higher command, and that properly is the air forces that I spoke of. The best illustration we have as an air force was illustrated during the last war by the French Aerial Division, which operated directly under General Headquarters. This was sent from one section of the line to the other as needed. It was a self-contained unit consisting of pursuit and bombardment, and at various times it operated with and supplied the necessary combat aviation for two different armies.
This illustrates the method of employment of night aviation for defensive and offensive purposes. Our principal
