26. China's side had been well handled, largely by the aid of the United States. Her authority was greatly extended over the territory that had formerly been taken away from her by the various powers.

27. Japan now began to realize what industrializing her own country meant. Her rural population flocked more and more to the cities to enjoy the high wages of the factory worker. Small as is her cultivatable area, only one-twelfth of the surface of her islands, she began to feel the lack of laborers on the farms. The prices of agricultural products went up. Her laborers, taking a cue from the westerners, began organizing into labor unions. Her artisans obtained an eight hour day. Their wages were boosted until now they are about seventy per cent of those in America and England and, as the Japanese turn out only about seventy per cent as much work per day, the total output per dollar, of cost, is about the same as in the west. Generally speaking, her mechanics are excellent workmen. Her raw materials cost tremendously, iron products costing almost three times what they do in the United States.
