The Democratic Party helped you with Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, Fair Labor Standards, Higher Minimum Wages, FHA Home Loans, Increased Veterans Benefits, Medicare, MedicAid, and much, much more.

Now, the Democratic Party needs your help!

The Democratic Party is in debt. More than $9,300,000.00 in debt from the 1968 election. Why? Because too many other people let the other guy give.

Now, we're desperate. There's more at stake than a debt. We're talking about the survival of the two-party system.

And here's what every American stands to lose. The Democratic Party--the party of the people. The party that has always provided Americans with jobs and prosperity.

So now we ask you for support. Help the Democratic Party all you can--so it can continue to help you all it can.

Excerpts from typical letters urging Dollars for Democrats

Whitinsville, Massachusetts
"...May I recommend that you put on a campaign and inform the Democratic voters that if we expect to win over the White House next November, we must put our shoulder to the wheel and wheel in some dough to wheel out the Republicans... Attached hereto is my check for $5.00 to start the wheel rolling. ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE."
Major P. Oscar Picard

Chesapeake, Virginia
"...Herewith the sum of $3.00 for the Democratic Party. If all Social Security recipients would send only $1.00 each month the Party could pay off its debts..." "P.S. President Nixon cannot veto this contribution."
Mr. and Mrs. Sid Johnson

Williamston, North Carolina
"...Please use your influence in devising a nationwide drive to get this debt paid off before the 1972 election. I am sending this letter to several other well known Democrats to do the same. My check for $10.00 is being mailed today..."
Welch M. Batten

Sacramento, California
"...An article on the editorial pages of the Sacramento Bee made me feel kind of cheap being a Democrat and yet never having really contributed to the help of the party. I think this article and all others like it should be aimed at myself and all the other Democratic voters to help before there might not be a Democratic Party. So dig the little fellow and make him want to help and accept my $20 donation with thanks."
Robert E. Stadler

Cranston, Rhode Island
"...I am enclosing $1.00 to the "Dollars for Democrats" campaign which I hope will ensue from this letter to you...I was greatly disappointed that the President killed the Pastore amendment by his threatened veto and hope a "Dollars for Democrats" campaign will somehow compensate for this defeat..."
George Strejcik

Tampa, Florida
"I believe all Democrats know the party needs money or go down the drain...We people who have only a living wage can't send big checks but would feel proud and happy to contribute to the party that cares for the ordinary people like myself. Small amounts add up..."
Esther Leaman

Ocean City, New Jersey
"...My idea is for you on TV to request a dollar each. I think you would be surprised at the response. What have you got to lose. To prove my point, I am a registered Republican and I'm not wealthy so why not try."
S. E. Keegan

New York, New York
"...Herewith my lucky $7.00 check to start off your new money committee to raise fifty million dollars and even more to win our 1972 election campaign."
Reuben Marshall

Louisville, Kentucky
"...Please request one dollar per Democrat...the public is ready, you can believe me, they have had enough of Mr. Nixon, as proven recently in our Kentucky..."
Roy Hart

A.P.O. New York 09055
"...Enclosed is my "Dollar for Democrats". Now that the campaign fund amendment has been put aside, Democrats should show that they can amass contributions too. Great publicity should be given to the fact that their contributions come from the ordinary voter-unlike the large amounts contributed by corporations and wealthy individuals to the Republican Party..."
Mrs. R. I. Skinner

Garrett Park, Maryland
"...Enclosed is my check for $5.00 to be applied against our debt. I think you will find that there are millions of us little people who would like to pay a tiny share and make us a party of the people-not just slaves of big business..."
Mrs. Ilah Geiser

Wylie, Texas
"Wake up man! What is a 9.3 million debt? We can raise that money with no sweat. Issue a nationwide appeal for each loyal Democrat to give 50c to get our party into a position to face Nixon and his rich boys on an equal footing. Come on man. Let's go..."
Ed Barrett

Huntington, Indiana
"...The people are, I feel, sick about having the very rich rule their lives... Why not a national call for all retirees on Social Security to send $1.00. If it was advertised, I'm sure many millions would contribute to defeat a very controversial President who cares nothing for the aged, the poor or middle income..."
Mrs. Hazel Replogle

Denver, Colorado
"...Since it looks as though the campaign funding amendment will not make it this time, I'm enclosing my dollar anyway. It occurred to me that if you could figure an inexpensive way to get the word out, you might be able to pick up a good portion of that $20 million from the average disgusted citizen who might just send you a dollar..."
Mario Lalli

Piscataway, New Jersey
"My husband and I, as Bell System employees, feel very strongly that the present indebtness incurred by the National Democratic Committee for telephone service in prior elections should be billed direct by the Bell System to Democrats themselves.

In view of this my husband, who is a Bell Telephone Laboratories employee, and I, an AT&T employee, are each contributing $5 in the enclosed check as a contribution to "Pay the Bill to Bell".

We sincerely hope and encourage other Bell System Democrats to pay up in keeping Democracy alive in America."
Dorothy K. Power
(Mrs. Edward J. J. Power)

"Would you please, please, PLEASE publish in newspapers the address of where we housewives, in particular, could send you contributions?...We, in particular, will gladly keep a dollar or so out of our household money to help the cause. Believe me, it took a lot of doing to find this address, so please make it available to everyone, and you'll see that debt quickly vanish!"

Special Notice Tax Credit

Under the new law you can take a tax credit for 1/2 of your contribution up to a maximum credit of $25 on a joint return or $12.50 if you file separately. In other words, you get back $1.00 for every $2.00 contributed because the credit comes right off your final tax bill.

Or if you prefer you may take a tax deduction just as you deduct charitable gifts. The limitation is $100 on a joint return, $50 on a single return.
