[[image - black & white photograph of I.H. Burney]] The National Insurance Association 1973 Convention July 22-25, 1973 Regency Hyatt House Atlanta, Georgia I.H. Burney, president, Afro-American Life Insurance Company, was elected president of the National Insurance Association during the final session of NIA's 52nd annual convention held July 10-12, 1973 in Los Angeles. Formal installation of the unanimously elected officers took place at the President's Banquet. Burney, who has been associated with Afro-American Life since his graduation from Atlanta University in 1931, had most recently served NIA as vice president of the Home Office Section. He is also chairman of Region IV Task Force of N.I.A. Corporation, and a member of the EDA Commission. In the past he has been a member of the board and assistant secretary of the Home Office Section. Prior to his election as president of Afro-American Life in 1967, Burney had been vice president-secretary. During his early years with the company he was an agent, district manager and regional director, working at various times in the Athens, Atlanta, Savannah, Ga. and Tampa, Fla. districts. He is a member of the Southern Regional Council, the Jacksonville, Fla. Chamber of Commerce, and the finance committee of the Florida diocese of the Episcopal Church. He became the first Black since Reconstruction to be appointed to a policymaking board in Jacksonville when he was named to the Recreation Board. He also serves as a director of the Metropolitan YMCA and the Boys' Clubs of Jacksonville. Burney is married to the former Miriam Inez Cunningham of Atlanta and has two daughters, Belva Ann Burney, and Mrs. Miriam B. Stamps.
