The Student National Medical Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Leadership Development, Social Awareness, Service to Humanity, and Excellence as Physicians among Black and minority health care professionals.

The objectives of the organization are implemented through several programs:

The National Medical Preceptorship Program - affords the student who has completed his second year of medical education the opportunity to get "on-the-job" office training by working with a practicing physician.

The Economics Benefits Program - offers substantial reductions on such items as life insurance, new car purchases, and major appliances.

The Minority Student Study - is a retrospective study taken to obtain information and to answer questions concerning minority equipment and retention in medical schools. This study, the first of its kind ever attempted, will have far-reaching implications on medical and health care.

We have also established a national center for Minority Women in Medicine to view the issues and problems involving Black and minority women in medicine.

Ever conscious of health care problems affecting Blacks and minorities, we began, in the San Francisco area, an educational and screening project designed to make the community more aware of the "relevant aspects of Sickle Cell Anemia."

SNMA has recently begun two new projects: a Hypertensive Education Program which will educate medical students and communities about Hypertension, its causes and cures and an African Experience in which we can share our knowledge and gain in return for a broader scope of understanding and knowledge of the medical problems affecting the African countries.

Black and minority physicians before us have erected a firm health care foundation. We believe that the objectives that we have set for ourselves and the teaching we have received from them will render us thoroughly qualified to assist in the delivery of total, quality health care.
