purposes of the Sorority in a dramatic and narrative form. In 1938 Lambda and Tau Omega again hosted the Regional Conference with the theme of, "Advancing Frontiers of Alpha Kappa Alpha."

During World War II Lambda Sorors were very active in the Harlem Hospital Medical School Service Department. Several Lambda Sorors enrolled in the Russel Sage Foundation to prepare for volunteer work in case of an emergency.

Lambda made monetary contributions to recreation centers for soldiers in New York City and sponsored entertainment for officers and enlisted men. Lambda was also one of the sponsors of the New York State Conference on Negro Youth and participated in the formation of a state-wide program. While Lambda was volunteering her services, Tau Omega was directing her attention to the employment of Black women in the professions, industry and white collar jobs. Tau Omega's intentions were to explore the fields and ascertain new fields for Black women. Tau Omega also explored the possibilities of Black women maintaining their wartime employment status in peacetime.

In 1946 Lambda started one of her most successful community projects, WADAKA - meaning Wadleigh-Alpha Kappa Alpha. This program, financed and administered by Lambda was directed toward the high school girls of Wadleigh High School. Its goals were to 1) increase and develop cultural interests among young Black women; 2) to introduce them to sources of recreation outside the Harlem community; 3) introduce them to young Black college women; and 4) introduce them to various types of employment opportunities.

In 1951 Lambda's Health Committee under the direction of Soror Ann Mallory distributed books and magazines to hospital patients in Harlem Hospital. During the same year Lambda also set up a Mentally Retarded Children's Project. Mentally retarded junior high school girls were taught how to properly cook and serve simple meals and were given lessons in personal hygiene.

Between 1951 and 1971 Lambda chapter has changed many of her goals as far as her relationship to the Black community. Lambda is currently working to erase the stereotype of Black sororities, as that of BOLD SOLD SISTERS, Lookin' down from Convent Ave. on the poorer folks below." Her method is to: 1) get to know the people of the community both well-to-do and poor; 2) get other Greek letter organizations to participate in community activities; 3) help keep the Black community united by not forming alliance against militant organizations, but by working with the; and 4) find out the real needs of the Black community rather than work on the superficial one of giving our people white culture.

In January of 1971 Lambda chapter sponsored a fund-raising affair for the group of Black men and women who established for themselves the task of policing their neighborhoods, in conjunction with the New York City Policeforce. The community recognized that Lambda chapter, as a representative of Alpha Kappa Alpha, was concerned and involved with their plight to reduce crime in the area. The affair heightened the community's awareness of the many cultural events that Alpha Kappa Alpha can provide. The aair was successful because of: 1) Lambda's contribution to the Association of $150.00; and 2) the community spokesmen had requested that Lambda host another such affair.

On March 27, 1971 several Lambda Sorors entertained at the children's ward of Harlem Hospital. This project has strengthened the chapter's image within the community-based hospital. On the same night Lambda sponsored a dance to raise money to help Harlem Preparatory School. The financial contribution was one hundred, but this cannot measure up to the enthusiasm generated by those in attendance to work for the success of Harlem Prep.
