FIRST AID AND HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The Imperial Council of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and its Auxiliary, the Imperial Court, the Daughters of Isis are engaged in a widely diversified program that covers the spectrum of activities from being an active participant in the Civil Rights Struggle, Research in the area of ills that affect the human body, Educational Opportunities for young men and women, sponsoring various types of Youth Programs, Care for the Aged in many respects, Christmas Baskets for the unfortunates, annually supporting the United Negro College Fund, and many others too numerous to mention. There is another phase of its manifold activities which, though possibly, is not as widely publicized, is nonetheless a meaningful one. It is the Department of First Aid and Health. This function has to do with alertness to the incidence of persons becoming ill during the Sessions of the Imperial Council, or wherever a group of Shriners and Daughters of Isis assemble. This project was initiated by Mrs. (Daughter to the Organization) Lucille Scales, a retired Captain in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps. Durin gthe [[During the]] 1951 Shrine Convention held in New York in 1951 someone was taken suddenly ill and there was no doctor available. Mrs. Scales rushed to the person's aid and did such an expert job that when Dr. G.B. Key of St. Louis, Mo. arrived and observed what a wonderful pob [[job]] she had done, he immediately suggested that she begin to develop a program designed to aid the physicians in the performance of their duties and be available to meet such emergencies. The results were the formulation of the Department of First Aid and Health. It is composed of a group of Registered Nurses, L.P.N.'s, Nurses Aids, etc. All of whom are members of the Daughters of Isis. These dedicated ladies give unstintingly of their time and talents, often working long hours in administering to the needs of persons who become ill, as well as assisting the doctors. They are now an integral part of the Shrine Medical Board, and are indeed the unsung heroines of the Imperial Council's multitudinous functions. Theirs is a LABOR OF LOVE.
