B&W AWARDS $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO THREE OUTSTANDING BLACK STUDENTS

Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. has announced that three students will attend college this fall on $1,000 company-sponsored National Achievement Scholarships.

The scholarships are awarded annually to outstanding black high school seniors across the country. Of the 55,000 candidates who take the National Merit Scholarship Test each year, only 260 are selected as National Achievement Scholars.

This year's winners are Miss Cleo E. Powell, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millas Powell of Emporia, Va.; Miss Yvonne Gomez, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gomez of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Frank E. Emory, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Emory, Sr., of Wilson, N.C.

Selection is based on test scores, academic performance, community and school leadership as determined by the National Achievement Scholarship Corp. Brown & Williamson plays no part in naming the recipients.

Miss Powell, a senior at Brunswick High School, plans to attend Virginia Union University and major in psychology. She is president of the senior class, secretary of the National Honor Society, a cheerleader, member of Who's Who Among High School Students and the Society of Outstanding American High School Students.

A senior at Stuyvesant High School, Miss Gomez plans to major in pre-medicine at Cornell University. She, too, is a member of the National Honor Society and has received several certificates for excellence in scholarship. A poet, pianist and gymnast, Miss Gomez is currently enrolled in a pre-medical training program for high school students administered by New York University.

Mr. Emory will graduate from Ralph Fikes High School in June and plans to attend Duke University where he will major in pre-law. A member of Who's Who Among High School Students, he has attended both the North Carolina Governor's School and East Carolina University honors seminar. As a member of the Rotary International Intern Program, Emory has served at a research chemist at North Carolina's Research Triangle.
