The Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School is the academic and professional arm of the Los Angeles County - Martin Luther King, Jr., General Hospital - a public teaching hospital.

Incorporated as a private, non-profit California institution in August, 1966, the Drew School was co-founded by the Charles R. Drew Medical Society (Los Angeles Chapter, National Medical Association) and the UCLA and USC Schools of Medicine, and is governed by a 19 member Board of Directors with representatives of the Drew Medical Society, the two universities, the immediate and regional L.A. community, and the National community.

The Drew School is comprised of 10 clinical departments. It is affiliated with the UCLA and USC Schools of Medicine in an agreement whereby members of the Drew faculty hold con-current, full-time appointments in one, but not both universities. Its affiliation with King Hospital provides for Drew Department Chairmen to con-currently be Chiefs of the corresponding clinical services at King.

At first glance, the Charles R. Drew Post Graduate Medical School seems to be quite like any other professional institution.

But, a closer look at the Drew School shows that it is more than a center for the transmission of information and training of physicians and specialists; it is a place truly committed to the concept of "Health and Caring" - a center of social action.
