communities where the need for a relevant training program manifests itself. Since it opening in November 1967, OIC/NY has experienced a steady program expansion into needy communities in Harlem, the Lower East Side, the Bronx and Queens.

THE PROGRAM FORMAT
As stated earlier, OIC offers a multi-faceted vocational training program. This top notch training program has an aggregate of nine course offerings which include: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration; House Repairs; Clerk Typing; Computer Programming; Clerk Typing; Computer Programming; Computer operation; Food Service; Data Entry, Industrial Electricity and, Secretarial Skills. These course are offered by the various branches in a combination of both day and evening programs. The above courses are geared specifically to the needs of industry and to the needs of students. 
  An essential component of the training program is on-going counseling for trainees. Beginning with the intake interview and placement testing, the trainee is followed through the training phase (lasting approximately 12-24 weeks) until an assessment is made that the trainee is "Job Ready". However, counseling does not stop at that point but rather continues through the actual job placement and beyond.
  Not all trainees enter the vocational training program directly. The "feeder" or prevocational program gives people a chance to achieve basic education in as short a time as possible. The feeder curriculum includes instruction in communication skills, Computational Arts, English as a Second Language and High School Equivalency Preparation. (Many people go on to college after the High School Equivalency Course.) Also, there is instruction in Consumer Education, Minority Group History and Job strategy-subjects which have a great deal of relevance to many of the trainees. When the individual trainee reaches his own level of readiness, he/she then enters the vocational program, is placed on a job (as is the case with the High School Equivalency Program) or goes on to college.

In addition, OIC Sponsors an on-the Job training program which, after a successful contract year, is now in its second year of operation. The OJT Program is a federally

funded CETA-Title I Program administered by the Office of Manpower of the City of New York's Economic Development Administration. The Department of Employment, Human Resources Administration of the City of New York is the designated operating agency. The Primary objective of the OJT program is to encourage private sector employers localed within the City of New York to hire and train the economically disadvantaged, unemployed and underemployed.

VITAL CORPORATE INVOLVEMENT
Probably the most essential element of the OIC story, which has helped dictate success of the program is corporate support. The active involvement of the corporate and business sector is achieved in two distinct ways: The Technical Advisory Committee and the Industrial Advisory Council. The Technical Advisory Committee, headed by Hume Smith, Vice President of the Banker's Trust Company, provides technical expertise and practical resources such as the design and refinement of curriculum, job development, and training in the "World of Work" concept.

On the other hand, the Industrial Advisory Council which is chaired by Frederick Collins, President of the Sperry and Hutchinson Company deals essentially with fund raising and policy-making. The members of this council set the tone within their companies for the general-support and assistance which the company will render to OIC. Some 30 corporations are represented on these committees.

  The OIC story is an encouraging one. Partnership with industry is invaluable in the manpower training field. Since its inception OIC of America has trained well over 100,000 people of all ethnic persuasions. OIC of New York has participated in the training of over 10,000 men and women since its beginning. The OIC family looks towards its second decade of addressing its moral mandate to alleviate suffering and unemployment in New York City with hope and inspiration.
