THE HISTORY OF CHI ETA PHI SORORITY

Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., is an organization of registered nurses and student nurses. The organization was founded October 16, 1932, by Mrs. Aliene C. Ewell with the assistance of eleven other nurses. The Charter Chapter, Alpha, was organized at Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C., with the two-fold purpose of elevating the plane of nursing and increasing interest in the field of nursing.

At its inception Chi Eta Phi Sorority was composed mainly of Black professional nurses. Today, it is a well integrated group of nurses working together in Service to Humanity. There are fifty-nine chapters located in twenty-one states, the District of Columbia, and one foreign country, namely Monrovia, Liberia, Africa.

Chi Eta Phi's Service to Humanity has spread over the United States and into Africa through civic and cultural activities and through financial contributions to deprived people. The Sorority encourages continuing education; supports civic and charitable organizations and awards local and national scholarships to students in Nursing.

Chi Eta Phi members are making outstanding professional, civic, social and cultural contributions on local, national and international levels.

Specific achievements and contributions made by Chi Eta Phi Sorority for the past 36 years are recorded in the first edition of "The History of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., 1932-1967." The sorority house was purchased in Washington, D.C., and dedicated on July 11, 1971.

In August, 1973, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, in cooperation with the American Nurses Association, restored the gravesite of Mary Eliza Mahoney (first known Negro graduate nurse). The accomplishments of this great sisterhood will continue to be recorded in history.
