Houston

The recent Annual Banquet of NAMD's Houston Chapter was an enormous success with over 350 people in attendance. The theme was "The New Pulse of the Houston Consumer Market Place." Lebaron Taylor, vice president - CBS Records, was guest speaker.

The awards presented were: The Emphasis Award given jointly to Percy Creuzot for Frenchy's Po Boy and Wayne Russell of Wayne Russell Ford; the Community Service Award presented to Madgelean Bush representing the Martin Luther King Center; Jim McLin of Lifesaver, Inc. was named Marketer of the Year; and Sonceria (Sonny) Messiah of the Houston Chronicle received the Presidential Award.

During this quarter, the Houston Chapter's luncheon meetings have featured speakers who've included: George Smith, president of Smith Pipe & Supply, which ranked seventh on Black Enterprise magazine's Top 100 Black Businesses - Smith spoke on the key to his success; Joe Kerven, assistant to Texas governor Bill Clements, who addressed minority appointments and upcoming projects; Pluria Marshall, president of the Black Media coalition discussed the FCC's deregulation of radio stations; and Palmer Bowser, executive assistant to Houston Mayor Jim McConn, spoke on city minority contracts.

The Houston Chapter hosted the first of a series of regional workshops December 14-16. The Southwestern Regional Workshop's topics included: Industry and Student Relations; Target Marketing Strategies in Texas; and General Market/Segment Market - How Do They Relate. Guest speaker for the workshop was Ray Euland, vice president of Public Affairs for Pillsbury.

Chicago

New or revitalized chapters are popping up all over these days. The Chicago chapter is among that number.

"In August we contacted 15 of the old members. Out of that 15 five responded and helped us re-establish the Chicago chapter," explained Lumus Byrd, who has since left the Chicago area. "We looked for ways to revive the chapter and build membership."

"We've since elected officers and we're meeting once a month. We haven't started a strong membership drive yet because we're mapping out programs and directions for the chapter. We are going to make the Chicago chapter a strong chapter again. We plan on being a strong trade association within the Chicago area," added Chapter President Valjeanne Jones of Columbia College.

BOARD BRIEFS

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE REPORT - The Constitution Committee met in New York City November 15 and discussed the possible revision of the constitution and bylaws. The meeting, which was chaired by Octave LaBeet, was also attended by Bernard Smoots, Freddi Moody, Joe Nelson, Eugene McCullers, and Bud Ward.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE - Fund-raising possibilities and opportunities are the Economic Development Committee's first priority. At a meeting held in Houston in November, the Committee discussed the possibility of a national raffle, using as a model a raffle that the Houston chapter has. Expanding the amount of advertising in the Emphasis magazine was also discussed, as well as stepped-up solicitation of VIP memberships. (Chuck Smith averages about 35 per year - his 1980 goal is 50.)

CENSUS '80 - We have been hearing a lot of talk lately recently about the 1980 census, and NAMD has made a commitment to become involved. Our involvement as NAMDers and Black Americans is to make sure all Blacks are counted.

We don't want another two million undercount. we don't want to wait another ten years before our true numbers are known.

If we want our fair share of federal funds, political representation and CLOUT...we need an accurate and true historical view of the changes in the social, economic and demographic characteristics of Blacks.
