The United Negro College Fund Arthur Ashe Tennis Benefit is a tremendous source of pride to the entire UNCF family.
Now in its sixth year, the event owes its longevity and its success to one person, Arthur Ashe, a man unique in his persistence, talent and dedication. His vision has molded the Tennis Benefit into a mainstay of the New York social calendar - thousands of tennis fans and UNCF friends join us every year at the Feit Forum for a wonderful afternoon.
The beneficiaries of Arthur's vision are the 50,000 students now enrolled in UNCF's 41 private, predominantly black colleges. Thousands of dollars raised through the benefit help keep UNCF colleges thriving and growing; they keep opportunity alive in America.
Arthur has given all of us-the volunteers who criss-cross New York distributing posters and flyers and selling tickets, the celebrities and pros who donate their time and talent, the spectators who bring their friends and family, and the UNCF staff- a memorable opportunity to help those who need us the most, and to have a good time doing it.
I could not imagine a finer or more sincere gift. At this time we honor Arthur Ashe, a practical man of leadership and great achievement, who has traveled many roads, lived in many worlds among many people, who has chosen to stay close to his roots and to share with all of us his vision of the future.
