135th Street was the central spot of my youth. It contained the Harlem Branch YMCA, where I learned to swim, and sing "This Little Brown Bear" under the direction of Troy Gorham. It was the place where Mr. Phillips used to, as we would say, put a soup plate over our heads and cut around the outside. It was the place where Chink Lind, taught us to play basketball and gave physical instruction. It was the place where we would sit in its little theatre and hear Putney Dandridge play the piano while we waited to see if we would get a
