CHILD WATCH: Looking out for Children:
Program Elements:

• National Immunization Program (NIP)
— Encourage active member support for a comprehensive immunization education program.
— Serve as advocates for complete immunization against vaccine preventable diseases. Every child needs protection against these seven serious childhood diseases: Polio, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Measles, German Measles, Mumps.
— Assist in the establishment of a national public awareness campaign for childhood immunization.
— Lobby for the establishment of laws covering the immunization of children and suport the strict enforcement of school laws and the exclusion of susceptible students prior to school entry and during outbreaks.

• Serving the Unborn and Newborn (SUN)
A National Project of A-NMA in concert with The March of Dimes in interest of childbearing adolescents.
Early childbearing poses increased risks for the health of both mother and baby. Infants of adolescents are twice as likely to die during their first year. Pregnant adolescents are often isolated from the mainstream and have difficulty mobilizing resources and effecting linkages that enable them to utilize the network of community resources effectively.

UP WITH YOUTH:

Program Elements:

Examine the issues that confront our youth and stimulate the involvement of professionals and community leaders in programs and services that enhance their development

• Assault On Illiteracy Program (AOIP)
— Develop a task force to work on the eradication of illiteracy.
— Organize a tutorial program that will develop basic educational skills and enhance the opportunities for higher educational levels and employment.
— Collaborate with other national organizations and programs active in experiential education.

• Curtailing Adolescent Pregnancies (CAP)
Concerns about adolescent pregnancy and sexuality are not new. We are witnessing a growing awareness of the problems associated with these issues and a growing commitment to addressing them. What can we do about the epidemic of adolescent pregnancies?
Develop three initiatives:

1. INTERVENTION (projects that assist already pregnant teens in the area of education, social and medical services)

2. PREVENTION (programs that reach the young people before pregnancies occur — include educational and clinical components)

3. PROGRAMS FOR PARENTS (programs that enable parents to become more effective sex educators for their own children)
