Wyomia Tyus

Born in Griffin, Georgia in 1946, Wyomia Tyus was discovered by a track coach of Tennessee State University. Ed Temple saw her perform in a Georgia high school meet. With his encouragement, she spent her summers training in Tennessee. In 1964, having already achieved distinction as a sprinter, Tyus enrolled at Tennessee State and began the training that would lead her to the Olympics. Tokyo 1964, gave her the first opportunity to make her mark on the famous Olympic games. In the 100-meter dash, she stunned observers with a time of 11.4 seconds. Four years later, at the Olympic games in Mexico City, she bettered her previous record and ran the 100-meter dash in 11 seconds flat, establishing a new mark for herself.
After the 1968 Olympics, Tyus retired as a sprinter only to re-emerge in professional Track & Field with the formation of the International Track Association early in the 1970's. Currently, Tyus is with the National Football League in Washington, D.C.
