"Canadian Club" presents "Nostalgia" the Beach Designers Showcase...

"CANADIAN CLUB," one of the world's most prestigious brand names invited emerging young Black designers to compete in it's National Fashion Showcase in New York City. The Showcase will provide exposure for talented newcomers to the fashion world.

Coordinated and produced by Yvonne Rose of COLLAGE CONNECTION, the fourth annual competition was sponsored for the first time by "CANADIAN CLUB."

The gala New York event was held on September 25, 1984 at the DAVID SCHWARTZ FASHION EDUCATION CENTER PARSON SCHOOL OF DESIGN, New York City.

Interspersed with the fashions in the competition were fashions by well known established award winning Black Designers, who paved the way and set an example for up and coming Black Designers. These well-known designers are:

WILLI SMITH for WIlliWear who was the 1983 Coty "Designer of the Year" (the highest women's wear honor). He has showrooms in New York and Paris, France. His fashions have appeared worldwide in every major fashion magazine.

JON HAGGINS who had just graduated from F.I.T. in 1969 was the first recognized black designers of the 60's era, and also in 1969 was one of the youngest designers ever to be nominated for the prestigiuos Coty Fashion Award. His fashions have graced the cover of Cosmopolitan numerous times and he has had his designs worn by such notables as Diana Ross, Joan Collins, and Helen Gurley Brown. 

SPENCER FLOURNOY manufacturer of fine furs, is a trend-setter among Black fur designers. In the mid-1094's he opened one of the first wholesale retail fur companies owned by a Black man and still runs that business on Seventh Avenue today. Mr. Flournoy is especially well-known for his one-of-akind fur coats and jackets for man and women.

CARL DAVIS, menswear designer known for both formal and business attire, and Vice-President of LeMans Apparel, Inc., has showrooms in both New York and Paris. His fine line of tailored mens apparel has received raves from many world famous celebrities and his suits have dressed hundreds of successful businessmen and entertainers.

RAYMOND PIZARRO, the 1983 National Winner of the black Designer Showcase Award is established in his business as a couture designer of women's fine fashions. His "timeless" clothes can be worn from year to year and mixed to compliment your new collection.

FREDERICK JONES, award winning hat designer is a historian and a connoisseur of fine fillinery for women. His hats have dressed many a women on Broadway as well as superstars Lena Horne, Diana ross, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight and Grace Jones among others.

The contestants in Canadian Club's Black Designers Showcase 1984 all have many things in common: talent, creativity and a drive to be successful in the fashion industry. Collage Connection, the producer of the New York showcase, is honored to present to you eighteen of the countries finest upcoming Black fashion designers.
