THE JESSE OWENS INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR ATHLETE AWARD

This annual award, presently the only one of its kind in the world, is presented to that amateur athlete who, in the opinion of an international blue-ribbon panel of sports experts, best personifies those qualities of that great Olympian after whom it is named. Those qualities are: excellence in athletic accomplishment and performance, a high standard of sportsmanship and a sincere commitment to international cooperation among people of all nations.
The Award is based upon individual merit regardless of race, national origin, color or creed and is fast becoming one of the most significant and creditable awards in the world. Already, its stature internationally is being compared to that of the Heisman Trophy nationally.
Calvin Massey designed the trophy, pictured on this page, which is a bronze globe encircled by figures of athletes in sports of all kinds.
The Sixth Annual presentation of the Award will be made at tonight's formal dinner, the proceeds from which will benefit the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Jesse Owens Foundation, Inc.
We salute tonight's winner!

President & Founder: Herbert P. Douglas, Jr.
Herbert Paul Douglas, Jr., Founder of the Jesse Owens International Amateur Award Trophy and Vice President of Schieffelin & Co., was an Olympic Medalist in the Long Jump in the 1948 Olympics. He credits Jesse Owens for motivating and encouraging him during his youth to pursue the Olympic dream.
In 1947, Herb dominated the running broad jump at every meet in which he ran. The following year, 1948, Herb became a member of the United States Olympic Team at the games in London, where he won the third place Bronze medal in the Long Jump and then was named Athlete-of-the-Year for the City of Pittsburgh.
That same drive and determination which made Herb a world recognized athlete has been transfered to his role at Schieffelin & Co., importers of such brands as Hennessey Cognac, Moet & Chandon Champagnes, Simi Wines and other wines and spirits.
Herb had another dream that came true--the Jesse Owens International Trophy Award--that serves to keep alive the memory of that great Olympian whose lofty standards of excellence, dedication, sportsmanship and brotherhood continue to inspire the youth of America and the world.
