Presswood *deceased National Motto: "Serving Youth and Adults June 24-29 1986 PALACIO DEL RIO HOTEL SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, an international service-oriented, community conscious organization composed of over 3000 women with a continuing commitment to service, was founded as a result of inspiration by the First Lady of the United States in 1964, Lady Bird Johnson, and the organizational efforts of Major Ozell Dean who combined her efforts with those of seven other women. The initial programmatic thrust of TLOD was to efface the educational, social, cultural, and economic challenges of the sixties to Black teenagers. Resultantly, Top Teens of America was organized so that Top Ladies of Distinction might impact on the societal situations affecting Black teenagers of all socio-economic levels. Each TLOD chapter sponsors a TTA chapter. Today the lives of approximately 3000 youth are being impacted by TTA program in which Top Teens assidiously work and network with each other, other youth, Top Ladies, the March of Dimes and other organizations to help alleviate some of the problematic situations facing youth of today as well as to meet the needs of youth in their respective communities. By means of the two national programs, TEENS INVOLVED IN PROGRAMS OF SERVICE (TIPS) and TEENS OUTREACH PROGRAM OF SERVICE(TOPS), a collaborative peer education program with the National Foundation-March of Dimes, Top Teens are invloved[[involved]] in seminars, forums and programs that deal with teen pregnancy, venereal diseases, teen problems, birth defects and suicide; at the age of 18 must be registered to vote and votes in each election; set up and man tutorial programs; work with the United Negro College Fund, March of Dimes, National Council of Negro Women, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other organizations in their communities; and, work with senior citizens and community beautification programs. Each level of TLOD -- national, area and chapter -- awards scholarships to graduating Top Teens who have exhibitied the highest qualities of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The national TTA scholarships are awarded at the national convention, Syn-Lod, to seven graduating Top Teens. In addition to the programmatic thrust, service to your, TLOD has three other thrusts -- service to senior citizens, service to enhance the status of women and community beautification. TLOD, cognizant of the effective and affective power of combined efforts to improve the human condition as its 1985-86 program theme "NETWORKING TO SERVE YOUTH AND ADULTS." To meet the challenges of the second half of the eighties, TLOD will work assiduously during the year to implement national program that will expand the organizational and programmatic horizons of TLOD and TTA; that will stimulate meeting the needs of local, national and international communities; that will impact judicial, legislative and executive decision-making; that will continually develop productive teenage citizens and leaders; that will enhance the lives of both youth and adults; and, that will promote the decent survival of the Black family.
