THE NEW IN NEW YORK

For nearly a century, the Statue of Liberty has been a one-woman welcoming committee. For millions of people, for visitors and immigrants alike, she has been, literally, the face of America. And now, in 1986, after history's most spectacular face lift, she'll be back as beautiful as ever, to welcome the more than seventeen-million people who will visit New York this year. The ceremonies surrounding her unveiling this July will be without doubt the biggest event in the country.

1986 marks another great event in the Big Apple. Of enormous practical interest to visitors is the opening this Spring of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The Convention Center's two exhibit halls are as big as fifteen football fields. The lobby, named the Crystal Palace, is as wide as two 747's, and its ceiling rises to a height that would easily accommodate Miss Liberty with her upraised torch. In all, the structure covers 22 acres, and in addition to the two exhibit halls, there are over 100 meeting rooms which can handle groups from 35 to 3,800. On any one day, a total of 85,000 can use the facility. In all the Western hemisphere, no convention center comes even close in terms of greatness and grandness. The center is located on 11th Avenue between 34th and 39th Streets. As they say, "You can't miss it."
