CHI ETA PHA [[PHI]] SORORITY, INC.

I. History

An international sorority of registered nurses and student nurses, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1932 in Washington D.C. by Aliene C. Ewell. Together with eleven other charter members. 

Our purposes are:

1. To encourage the pursuit of continuing education among members of the nursing profession. 
2. To have continuous recruitment program for nursing and the health profession. 
3. To stimulate a close and friendly relationship among the members. 
4. To consistently identify a corps of nursing leaders within the membership who will function as agents of social change on the national, regional and local levels. 

II. National Programs

The programs are the mechanisms by which our goals are achieved. Each annual Boule provides the opportunity to examine the goals and programs of the sorority and to set new directions as indicated by the needs of the members and by

social changes. The Programs and Project Committee has the responsibility to develop guidelines and to monitor the implementation of the programs as they are conducted by the local chapters of the sorority. 
The current focus of national programs include: leadership development, disease prevention and health promotion, recruitment and retention of nursing students, educational scholarships, a school project in West Africa, and networking with many groups. With the exception of any national priority that has been established at Boule, local chapters set their own priorities for programming. 

1. Leadership development

Leadership development seminars are held biannually as part of the Summit called by the Supreme Basileus, Provisions are made for special presentations designed to assist chapter basilei to develop effective leadership skills, thus  implementing one of the sorority's goals "to develop a core of nursing leaders."

Additionally, local chapters have been encouraged to identity [[identify]] and support individuals who demonstrate the potential capacity for achieving leadership positions in administration, clinical nursing, education or research. The understanding and effective use of political power has been targeted by the national body as a strategy to be developed by local chapters. 

2. Disease prevention and health promotion

a. Health Screening: specific programs are developed by local chapters to identify potential and actual health problems in target populations. They include establishing and recommending appropriate referrals for medical supervision of problems identified. 

b. Consumer Health Education: Interested individuals and/or groups are provided with health information and emergency care information. The focus centers on specific programs aimed at identifying health needs of the community, and providing information concerning the availability of health care resources in the community. 

c. Cancer Education Program: As a national priority, the sorority has joined with the American Cancer Society in meeting the challenge through education. 
The Sorority and the American Cancer Society's Public Education programs are action-oriented to motivate people to discuss facts about cancer, receive a PAP test, participate in a breast or hemoccult screening project or other detection examinations; also to take advantage of a specific American Cancer Society service such as free instruction in breast self-examination.
