and as if fate had decreed that they should bring ruin upon themselves, another rumor has seized them, or at least some of them.

They have heard, from the voice of the Angels probably, that a Great Document has been received by the "Freedmens Bureau," sealed with four seals, which seals are to be broken on the 1st day of January 1866. This wonderful paper they believe to contain their final orders from the Yankee Government which they believe is omnipotent. I do not think however this delusion is very general and a few days will drive it from their minds or they will be driven from their homes. When it comes to this I think they will give up those notions as strange as the story of the "Spring of Youth" which deceived a more intelligent people.

A great many complaints have been made by Freedmen against their employers from a misunderstanding of the contract or where no contract was made. These complaints are exceedingly perplexing, as I am unable to form an opinion from hearing one party only. The Freedmen complain that they are not well paid
