I have the honor to state that on Friday 18th August, a colored Woman was shot in an affray near Lake Station Newton County Miss.

The case was reported to me late Saturday night (19th inst) by the womans Son who represented the wound [[underlined]] mortal [[/underlined]], he wished to secure the statement of his mother before she died.  I therefore sent an efficient man, down on Sunday morn (20th inst) to investigate the case, and if he deemed necessary, to arrest the guilty party, he found it quite an unwarranted act on the part of J H Riley, from a careful hearing of all parties, but Mr. Riley presented a certificate from your office, that he should not be molested until the woman should recover.
