Office Sub Com'r. F.B.
Corinth Miss Oct 23d 1865

Sir —
I have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of yours of the 20th Inst. relative to employing my brother as clerk —

I wish to state, that I have had no one to assist me in the office — [[underlined]] except [[/underlined]] my brother — since the 1st of Sept. — Soon after that [[underlined]] I agreed to pay him [[/underlined]] Seventy-five dollars per month (& trust the Bureau to refund it) so long as the business was such that I could not attend to it, properly, myself — He done my writing, from the 7th of Sept to the 18th of Oct — on those terms. When — (The Mayor having forwarded by letter his acceptance of Col Thomas and proposition and business being [[underlined]] less [[/underlined]] pressing than it had been) — he returned to Ills. —

I have no clerk now, nor will I need one long [[underlined]] here [[/underlined]], if the Mayor's offer is accepted -

Besides the above "[[underlined]] bill [[/underlined]]" there soon [[underlined]] will be [[/underlined]] (Nov) two months [[underlined]] rent due [[/underlined]] at ten dollars per month for this Office —
