World of Religion
AGREEMENT on the form of church government is an indispensable part of any plan for Christian reunion.

This statement was made last week by Dr. Geoffrey F. Fisher, Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, in addressing the Canterbury Diocesan Conference last week. He was speaking of the recent rejection of episcopal orders by the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in considering a reunion proposal with the Church of England.

Concern with the form of church government, the archbishop said, "is not one that the Churches of England and of Scotland can argue out just between themselves, or in the abstract. All churches are concerned in it." Religious News Service reported his address.

An appeal was made last week to West German Protestant parishes by the German YMCA to raise funds for vacation periods for young East German refugees. Report of the appeal came from Dortmund.

A greatly enlarged program of religious education in school released time was urged in New York City last week as a means to help curb juvenile delinquency. The proposal was made by Frank D. O'Connor, Queens District Attorney.

Other proposals for hindering delinquency in "the critical summer months" included the enlistment of large numbers of lay volunteers to work with youth "on a local community and religious level" and the formation of a "Delinquents Anonymous" along the lines of Alcoholics Anonymous.

O'Connor was addressing the Queens County Grand Jurors Association. In addition to other proposals, reports RNS, he recommended the establishment of minimum security work camps for juvenile offenders.

European churches were challenged last week by Pastor Jan Hermelink, West German Protestant Missions leader, to provide teachers and scientific aids to help train Asian and African Theologians.

A new refugee problem is faced by Austria in trying to care for multitudes of Moslem refugees who, fleeing Russia, have become disillusioned with Communism.

Msgr. Leopold Ungar, director of Catholic charities for the Archdiocese of Vienna, conferred with high Government officials last week in Washington in an effort to cope with the problem.

Msgr. Ungar said thousands of Moslem students are being lured to Russia from Asia and Africa by offers of lavish college scholarships. Then they find they cannot return home "so they contrive to get permission to come to Austria. It is a most difficult problem and we cannot help but feel sympathy for these young people."

The annual conference of the Church of the Brethren, meeting last week in Ocean Grove, N.J., called upon Christians to bring "the full power of the Gospel" to bear on national and international situations.
