Wednesday June 9th Fair & sunshiney, good wind until about 10 AM then steady but light from N.E Saw Spitzbergen Islands about 9 A.M. & no Ice, at 11 AM was sun ahead Island a pretty sight covered with snow & sun shining on them. Rawest about 200 ft of Ice at 120 [[up arrow]] Noon 2 PM Pilot announces impassable Ice and NW course is taken, 3 Sealers trying to do as we get north, then west, but at 4:45 PM Pilot directed turn around as we were surrounded with ice, Now less than 100 mi from Danes Island and compelled to make a circle way around to attempt to get there. Saw Seal & Bay shot at it 3 times distance to great & Seal escaped into water. big one as a full grown Hog, 600 to 800#, 6.30 PM still going south looking for a passage west around the ice.
