SLAUGHTER IS APPALLING

(By the Associated Press.)
LONDON, Nov. 2.--Only two lines of forte, both known as Tchatalja, one to the north-west of the fortified city of Adrianople and the other stretching across the peninsula outside of Constantinople, now stand between Turkey and the total obliteration of her power in Europe.

One neither of these lines of forts can much reliance be placed in view of what has happened at other places supposed to be strongly fortified.

So confident are the Bulgarians of their ability to overcome the shattered army of Nazim Pasha, now stretched along the Tchatalja line built to defend the Ottoman capital, that part of their army is being sent back to Adrianople.

GOES TO [BRIDEWELL] TOGGED IN BLANKET

Christian Holmes [E?] says an a la Natural Role in [???] Absence of [Conventional] Wearing Apparel

Spectators sat suddenly [...] ard in their seats yesterday in the [Municipal] court of Judge Hopkins and [coc...ed] their ears in wonder. But they had [... heard] aright, for the judge once more [re...ed] his sentence upon Christian Holmes.

"Take off that suit of clothes and go to the bridewell for fifty days," was the stern command. "Take off your clothes at once. You may use my ante-room."

"But, judge," the prisoner faltered, "you see I-I haven't just exactly--that is I can't do both. This is--I have no other clothes."

But the decision of the court was unalterable and Christian Holmes retired to the ante-room along with the complainant in the case, Earl [Sc?oek], a student. Schrock had accused Holmes of stealing his "Sunday suit" and had told the judge that "unless I get 'em back today I can't go to church in the morning."

Five minutes after the verdict the face of Holmes showed for a moment in the jam of the door.

"Hey, judge, got a barrel?" he whispered into the courtroom.

An hour later the prisoner's transfer to the bridewell had been accomplished. He had been spared the humiliation of a barrel. He was draped in [a] flowing blanket.

Body of New York's Honored Son is Laid to Rest After Eulogy on His Life Is Delivered.

TRIBUTE AT WASHINGTON

(By the Associated Press.)
UTICA, N. Y., Nov. 2.--In the sacred seclusion of their own home and with their dead still with them, the members of the family of Vice President Sherman today met in prayer and funeral worship prior to the public ceremony, which was scheduled to take place at 2 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church in this city.

The service at the house began at 1 o'clock and was conducted by Dr. L. H. Holden of the Reformed Dutch church, who is the family pastor.

The service was conducted in the presence of only a few outside the immediate family. These consisted of Mrs. Sherman and her three sons and their wives, and of brothers and sisters of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman and their families.

The service was brief. Dr. Holden did not depart from the prescribed forms of the Dutch church, which included scriptural quotations and formulated prayers, the service closing with the Lord's prayer and a benediction.

Immediately after the last words fell from the pastor's lips preparations were begun for the removal of the body to the church and the procession soon began its solemn march thitherward.
