ON AUGUST 23, 1931, SIXTEEN WOMEN AND FORTY FOUR MEN TOOK OFF FROM CLOVERFIELD AIRPORT ON THEIR FIRST LAP OF THE 2400 MILE AIR DERBY TO CLEVELAND, OHIO.

For the first time in history of aviation, men and women pilots are competing this week  in a free-for-all across-country race from Santa Monica, Calif., to Cleveland, O. Sixty fliers, entrants in the race, are due in Phoenix at noon today. Here is the route of the derby, showing the various stopping places.
