March 2, 1954

Dear Mr. Chauveau:

May I write to inquire whether you would be willing to undertake a certain research work for me.

However, now that you are an independent man it would have to be understood that you would do this on a business basis, meaning that you will accept a remuneration for your time.

The point is the following:

The Duc de Mouchy died I believe about two or three years ago, and I would like to know whether the works of art - some of them interest me very much - have been distributed to his heirs or whether they remained the property of the Duchess. If I am not mistaken she lives 52 Avenue d'Iena.

I may just as well tell you now which item I am particularly interested in - it is a full length portrait of Bonaparte by Gros, for should luck favor your research you might perhaps be in a position to find out directly or indirectly whether the heirs are willing to sell this painting, and what valuation they put on it.

You might say that this inquiry emanates from America, but under no conditions should you mention my name.

Do let me hear from you in this respect and meanwhile with best regards,

Sincerely yours,

(Germain Seligman)
