Conservation of Paintings STUDIO 54 West 74th Street New York March 11, 1958 Jacques Seligmann & Co. 5 East 57th Street New York, N.Y. Gentlemen: As you know the P.G. gouache is completed. However, I have witheld the application of the coat of synthetic varnish on account for fragility of its painted surface. I have, therefore, initiated a series of tests on gouach samples simulating, as closely as possible, the surface we are dealing with. These samples will be coated and allowed to stand for a period of six months to prove reactions, if any. I will then report the results of the test and therefrom we can decide on the advisability of this procedure. Otherwise, having effected a complete restoration by transporting the painted parchment, still attached to one thin ply of the original mount, to a sturdier support, and also, having reattached the loose paint and retouched the required areas, I would say its restoration is completed. If, however, the painting can be afforded further preservation by varnishing, I would like to go through with it. (There is no record, that I know of, of this treatment having been done previously). In view of the foregoing, if agreable to you, I would appreciate a payment on account, pending delivery. Very truly yours, Henri G Gourtais Henri, G. Courtis
