FINE PERSIAN CARPETS & RUGS

385 MADISON AVENUE (AT 47TH ST.)
NEW YORK

#20795 Tahriz 40' x 22'6"

Extra fine quality, over 500 knots to the square inch. This carpet has about 70 million knots, and a close, velvety texture. In weave, as well as in coloring and beauty of design, this carpet is a superlative masterpiece.

The ground is in old ivory. A large rose medallion, oval shaped and pointed at both ends, occupies the center field and encloses a blue medallion, which in turn contains an ivory center. Inside of the latter is an olive-green center piece. Corresponding to the medallion in color and form are four corner pieces, placed in the same relative sequence as in the medallion itself.

The main border of the rug is in old ivory and is flanked by twelve band borders, six on either side. Four of these are blue, four ivory, two rose and two tan.

At either end of the large central medallion, in three panels set on the ivory field, is an inscription; the free translation of which reads as follows:

The Handiwork of SADEK the Artist and Weaver
Ordered by SEMSAR

I have become a slave
to the moon of thy Beauty.
In the praise of this rug
my life was spent.
This is a rug of the
palace of Dara.
A garden of roses for the
feast of my beloved.

In general, the pattern consists of flowers and foliage, gracefully intertwined, and suggesting the luxuriance of a garden in full bloom. The colors are unusually mellow, and the composition of the rugh indicates the art of a master weaver.
