This is an exceptionally fine specimen of the Persian palace carpet of the type which was especially made for ruling families of Persia.

The rug has a very soft, mellow rose ground on which there is a large serrated central panel in dark blue. Superimposed on this panel is a serrated square in an old ivory beige tone. The entire central panel is well covered with a graceful small palmette and floral design in ivory, tawny wood colors, soft rose, light blue, soft green and flecks of coral. Pendant from the central panel, after the ideal of the famous Ardebil carpet, are palmettes in dark blue garnished at the ends with sprays of flowers in a delicate tracery design. At each end of the central panel, there is pendant a small circular panel formed on the ground itself by a floral and spandrel design in tones of dark blue, light blue, green, soft gold and ivory. In the four corners there are dark blue panels, in the center of which is a rich red minaret, and over the entire field of the corners is a floral and arabesque tracery design in the same tones as in the central panel of the rug.

There are five borders; the main border being dark blue on which there are a series of Ispahan palmette designs connected with interlacing tracery in floral design in tones of rich red, soft gold, light blue, soft green, ivory, coral and tawny browns. The main border is flanked by soft ivory-beige borders and these in turn are separated from the field by a rich red border. All of the borders are separated from each other and the field by narrow guard bands containing elaborate and finely woven tracery designs.
